Is Batman: Arkham Asylum better than Uncharted 2? You betcha, says BAFTAs
- — 22 March, 2010 15:39
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards are interesting to watch because they usually pick all the games that didn't win awards in the U.S. True to form, the 2010 BAFTA Video Game Awards will surprise you with who went home empty-handed.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves led with nine nominations. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had eight, Batman: Arkham Asylum seven, and Assassin's Creed II followed with six. Assassin's Creed was shut out just as it was at the Game Developers Choice Awards and the DICE Summit. Arkham Asylum and Modern Warfare 2 managed to wrangle key awards away from accolade powerhouse, Uncharted 2, with Best Game ultimately going to Arkham Asylum. Also Scribblenauts didn't win in the handheld category -- now, there's a shocker.
The other significant BAFTA award went to Shigeru Miyamoto in the form of a BAFTA Fellowship. According to the Academy, this is the first fellowship ever awarded to a Japanese person in any entertainment medium recognized by the organization.
Personally, we don't mind that Batman pipped Uncharted 2 to the post -- as we noted in our most overrated games of 2009 feature, Uncharted 2 was far from perfect, despite some cool (scripted) action sequences. So three cheers to the Brits for choosing a solid action adventure game over story-driven hype. Anyway, that's our two cents done with. Read on for a full list of winners and losers.

so you expect losers with no life who gives out awards as their daily activity to know which is a good game!?
Hahahahaha

I'm sorry but no one said the game(Uncharted 2) was perfect, neither was Batman: AA. Actually I think the only reason the folks who run this site are "biased" towards Uncharted 2. I respect opinions but it seems as though GGG are just bitter and don't want to give credit where credit is due. Oh well something tells me that if ASCII or ODST were the ones to win the awards U2 won there would be no complaints from these guys.

Meh, I thought Uncharted 2 was better. Batman had really simple combat and a really meh/easy stealth system, I liked it, but overall it was disappointing to me.
Both are solid games though, and it's unfair to call Uncharted 2 story driven hype when it was a great game. But I think other games have done combat(GOW, DMC, NG, Yakuza, Bayonetta) and stealth(MGS, Tenchu, SC) than batman. It's a solid game but I don't think it's deserving of much other than being the first good batman game.

I applaud you for your arguments, Clock and Mark. Good job. You definitely convinced me that Arkham Asylum deserved the title of GOTY.

I wasn't trying to convince you, nor did I say that Arkham Asylum deserved it. In my opinion, U2 deserved it and is a better game than AA. I just love seeing fanboys mad.

Because I'm defending a game, that makes me a fanboy? Hmm. Interesting.

I disrespectfully disagree. I may not be a reviewer or truly anywhere close to the industry except an avid consumer, but I greatly enjoyed Uncharted 2 far more than I did Batman. While Batman was a fantastic game, I felt it could have done many things better, particularly to stop the player from falling asleep. Uncharted also never had notoriously annoying scenes like the one with Killer Croc in the sewers.
Uncharted simply kept impressing with its huge set pieces and fantastic scripted events. Throw in a compelling coop mode and some really solid competitive multiplayer and you not only have a much more complete package, but one with infinite replay value. The story was something I was far more interested in and the characters were much more likeable. When it came to Arkham Asylum, I felt Joker was truly the only interesting character. Batman sounded like a total tool through most of the game and the boss enemies failed to have the impact that they should have, given how deep the source material is. While I give props to Rocksteady for being able to put Batman in a game that didn't totally suck, they still managed to be bogged down by some of the standard hooks of the property which made it extremely predictable and trite. To say Uncharted was "story-driven hype" is a blind acceptance that Batman's story was absolutely terrible. To be honest, the only reason Batman received so much attention was because it was the one shining star in a history of absolute sh*t. It was also 'far from perfect'.
This website has failed to provide any compelling reading and has actually resorted to baseless fanboy comments in order to get hits off n4g. Fantastic job idiots.

Best Story: Uncharted 2
Best Action game: Uncharted 2
Best Score: Uncharted 2
Best Audio: Uncharted 2
Best Gameplay: Batman AA
Best Game: Batman AA
YEAH.... makes sense... Hey, I like both games... they are both great... Agreed with gameplay on Batman, but if a game beats the other on story, genre, score, and audio, do I have to even say more. We don't need a PhD to understand awards, they don't make sense and mean nothing!

Most of what Kris said is very true, and I agree.
I also want to point to what Shadow said, Uncharted 2 still cleaned the place out, even if it didn't win "Best Game" this one single time.
I'm 100% sure the only people who "hated" Uncharted 2 are the people who just don't want to believe games like that exist. Games that do it all, and do it all WELL.

Uncharted 2 deserved it. It was spectacular. Batman AA was really great but no where near as good as Uncharted 2.

I kinda agree Batman was better. When i played U2 it kinda felt to me like U1.5 with crazy looks. The thing i didn't like about U2 is that they played it safe.....

If I kill you all, I will get orbs. God of War Collection was the best game of 2009. God of War III is the best of 2010. Disagree and you can answer to my blades.

well I don't know about you guys but i've spent much more time playing U2 than BAA ..
U2 has better replay value & the multiplayer experience alone is better than that hacked fighting system of BAA ..
No fanboy flaming please, cos I'm not likely to return ..
Don't get me wrong I liked BAA a lot, I thought it was a deserving winner but it's always a matter of choice after all ..

Uncharted 2 is a good game BUT NOT THE GRAETEST GAME !!!
the game has 2 most boring levels ever “first level and snow level”
plus LOOK AT THE CHARACTERS LOOK AND THE HORRIBLE MOCAP ACTING “elena especially” FOR GOD’S SAKE !
and ppl say that the story is is the best ever told in a game in that year ??????! WTF !!
IMO the GRAETEST single player game”s” are :
MGS4
bayonetta

Batman is better only because it's crossplatform. Until uncharted comes to pc or Xbox, jury is still out on uncharted due to it being gimped to PS3 only. There should be a category for exclusive titles to avoid mindless discussions such as this!

My all time favourite games (gaming since late 70's) are the Uncharted games and Batman.
I agree that Batman may have clinched it because it's cross platform but it and the Uncharted games are such great all round gaming experiences.
Uncharted 2 overrated? Come on!

I am a bitch. You are a son of a bitch. FULL STOP
Uncharted 2 is way better than batman as batman is the gayest character in video game history. Look at his tight clothings and boner sticking out as if it was a mole chocking for air.

What a surprise, a Gaybox 360 fansite praising a multi - platform game over a PS3 exclusive. You know what's even more pathetic? The fact that, because the Xbox 360 games are the most low - quality, bad - graphics games in the world you morons can't even praise 360 exclusives, it has to be multi - plat title's now because even YOU know that the last - gen trash on the 360 couldn't win an award even if they were the only games in existence.
Uncharted 2 won far more "GOTY" awards than AA, only gaybox fanboys like Mark would disagree. Anyone who thinks, even for a second, that AA was better than Uncharted 2 has obviously never played either game.
You 360 gayboys can cry into your bowls of popcorn all you want but it doesn't change the fact that Uncharted 2 is better than any pile of overhyped, last - gen garbage on the Xbox 360. Gears Of War has GBC graphics, Halo is so linear it might as well be a guy on a theme park ride and Forza has some of the worst handling ever seen in a game. You really think gay, bad - graphics games like those will ever win a "GOTY" award? LOL.
360 retards have to keep praising multi - platform games because every Xbox 360 exclusive is somehow worse than the one before it. You morons cling on to AA, PS3 owners will actually have exclusive games to play this year. Uncharted 2 dominated 2009, just like God Of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5 will dominate 2010. Last - gen gayness on the 360 can't compete.

I like batman because it brings me back to a simpler time. Where consoles and computers didn't have the raw power to create some of the amazing things uncharted did and a game was reliant on the quality of the game mechanics and the story that weaved you through the game. I love uncharted but to me it's more of an experience than a classic game. Games that shove you along are great and fun, but i much prefer to be able to beat it on my own terms and speed, such as batman, bioshock and deus ex.

To me Uncharted 2 is by far and away the superior game. I am really not into the whole comic book thing, though. Never was and never will be. Check out post #17. LOL

For my 2 cents, I do have to say that U2 was the better game. This is coming for someone who owns both consoles and has played through both games at least twice. U2 has me for the better overall due to a better story. B:AA has got it because of the fun, interactivity it brings as a first in the Batman series is a LONG time. They are both equally fun. I would give U2 a 9.5 and B:AA a 9.0, they are both good.
As for the fanboy wars, guys (gals, maybe), seriously, shut up. This crap should be over by now. Both consoles are selling equally well and they both offer roughly the same quality of games. Knock it off. It's getting old how many of you children say how your console is better than the other guy's console. BOTH consoles have advantages and disadvantages, it just becomes personal preference, and if you bash anyone who doesn't like your precious machine, then stfu and grow up. Actually, I challenge you to go purchase the opposing console and buy several first-party games for it, then get back to your argument, because by then it'll most likely be invalid.

LMAO at all the crybabies, even Macloser didn't fail to show up.
More proof most Sony kids are exactly that, kids. I must hate PS3 to say that AA is better right? Thats why I platnum'd both Uncharted's and am on my 2nd playthrough of GOW3, ROFL.
AA came out of nowhere from a no name damn and is hands down the best superhero game ever made, finally have Batman a good game. Sorry you tools can't see that, maybe if I borrowed a some of your fangoggles.

LOL, Mark's pre - school spelling errors never cease to amaze me. Seriously, did your parents even send you to school or did they just send you chimney sweeping when you turned 5?
Keep crying, 360 gayboy, it won't change the fact that both the VGA's and the GDC voted Uncharted 2 GOTY over Batman: AA. You Microsoft girls can shed tears all you want but the fact is Uncharted 2 has won more awards than any game ever made, making it not only the best game of 2009 but quite possibly the best game of all time.
I can't wait for Markdouche to come back on here and say "I platinumed such and such a game and so that automatically means it's not as good as Batman.".
I tell you what, Markdouche, why don't you tally up the total number of "GOTY" awards for the 2 games and then see who comes out on top? Oh wait, that's not an option for you, is it? Because you crying fangirls don't like to deal in facts. Oh well......until then, keep crying and making an idiot out of yourself on the Internet, your self - deluded fanboy state of mind won't change the facts.

No game is perfect and there will never be a perfect game because someone somewhere is always going to hate it. As for the author's opinion, people shouldn't blast him for it. I mean it's not like he speaks for everyone, sheesh.
Personally I liked U2 more than AA even though I love both of those games. For me it was the story that pushed it over the edge.

As a PS3 owner... UC2 and Batman.. both were good. .. since I played UC1 previously..I can guess what to expect from UC2 but Batman was sudden thunder to me. even though I don't like to compare these games but I guess Batman have the upper as a Batman FAN also !! :P

It looks like a majority of ppl who have played BOTH games still think uncharted 2 is the best game. There is a REASON it won SO MANY awards ;) It is the best. But goodgearguide obviously has a bias towards batman...and it shows in this article. Uncharted 2 is CLEARLY better than Batman. Batman doesnt stand a chance up against an EPIC game like Uncharted 2 was..nuff said.

Oh, god. What a joke.
Arkham Asylum was a great game, yes, but it was far from the polish and artistic appeal that Uncharted 2 was. Uncharted 2 had one of the greatest overall presentations ever seen in a video game. That's what building your own engine does for you. Arkham Asylum was just covered in the dilapidated Unreal Engine "Next-Gen" filter.
For Arkham Asylum 2 to measure up, it'll need to be reworked in quite a few ways.
But nice try. I guess you'll get the hits you want from this.
