Microsoft has revealed that Windows Mobile 7 - the next version of its smartphone OS - is unlikely to be released until "late 2010".

Microsoft has revealed that Windows Mobile 7 - the next version of its smartphone OS - is unlikely to be released until "late 2010".

Phil Moore, UK head of mobility at Microsoft, said the OS has "been put back until late next year but it is definitely coming".

"You're going to see a lot more on Windows Mobile 7. Giving the enterprise users and consumers what they want will be part of Windows Mobile 7. You'll get flexibility on a much easier touch UI."

Microsoft released Windows Mobile 6.5, which it renamed Windows Phone, in October this year.

Windows Mobile is finished

Windows Mobile is lagging badly right now, and on the brink of being discontinued. Delaying the next major update for another year is complete suicide for the platform.

Meanwhile, iPhone and Android keep getting stronger, with major regular upgrades. Android in particular is growing very fast, with seemingly monthly updates, and a software store of over 20,000 applications.
