Courtney Love: not a fan of plastic guitars.
Courtney Love, Kurt Cobain's widow and part-owner of the Cobain estate, has let fly at Activision in a series of messages on her Twitter account. Love claims she never gave Activision permission to use her late husband's appearance in Guitar Hero 5 and believes the game will be recalled as a result. Earlier in the month, Activision released images and videos of the deceased Nirvana frontman as he appears in the game.
"FOR THE RECORD I DID NOT APPROVE KURTS AVATAR FOR GUYITARHERO5. i think Kurt would despise this game alone let alone this avatar", stated Love. "they are doing a recall you can be sure of that. waita few hours maybe tomorrow press and etc", she added in a later tweet.
In separate tweets, she also called the Guitar Hero franchise "odious", confessed to hating it and claimed Kurt would have too.
Love later admitted to speaking with Activision about the possibility of Cobain appearing in the game, but claims an agreement was never reached: "it was presented to me and i said 'show me a better avatar' TO DRAG MY HEELS. [I] never did intended on allowing [Kurt to appear]."
Gaming website Kotaku contacted Activision and received a reply from the company that stated: "Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5."
But it would seem Love's incessant tweeting on the subject is not just hot air. "Activision is fulllo f sh*t... i never intended to APPROVE this sh*t, they are doing a recall you can be sure of that." In her most recent post, she stated: "wait til you see what my lovely lawyer has cooked up, i never ever signed off on this."
Could Courtney Love have killed the Guitar Hero star? We'll keep you posted as the story unfolds...
