Father’s Day Gift Guide: Great handsets for the mobile phone lover

We’ve shortlisted a range of great mobile phones to suit any dad -- from the tech lover to the Luddite -- this Father’s Day.

Best budget buys for dad

3 Mobile INQ1, RRP: $249 Teenagers beware! If your dad is anything like mine and he tracks your every movement through Facebook, this phone probably isn't a good gift idea. Still, 3 Mobile’s INQ1 mobile phone provides the social-networking features your dad might need to connect to close friends and network with colleagues. Supporting Windows Live Messenger, Skype and Facebook, the INQ1 will ensure your dad is always online, even when away from a computer. Whether that's good news or not — that's up to you!

Sony Ericsson W705, RRP: $649 Sony Ericsson is no stranger to the slide form factor, which is why it's no surprise its W705 mobile phone is well-designed. Offering a Walkman-inspired music player, Wi-Fi and a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash, the W705 provides several high-end features at a decent price.

Nokia E71, RRP: $709 The Nokia E71 mobile phone proves you don't need to spend over $1000 to get a good handset for your dad. It’s not a smartphone, but this Symbian-based mobile has a full QWERTY keyboard and boasts the ability to view and edit Microsoft Office documents as well as PDF files. For the comparatively low price tag you also get Wi-Fi, HSDPA and Bluetooth connectivity; it's a great alternative to Research in Motion's BlackBerry Bold for your dad.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
