Digital radio launch celebrated with outside broadcast

Broadcasters take part in a joint event broadcast to mark the launch of digital radio across Australia

Broadcasters and radio personalities from more than 40 different commercial and public radio stations participated in an outdoors broadcast this morning in the nation’s capital cities, to celebrate the launch of digital radio services in Australia.

In Sydney’s Martin Place, presenters from radio stations such as ABC Radio National, Triple J, Nova 96.9 and 2Day FM broadcast from booths lining the plaza from 5:30am. At 7:40am, all stations broadcast a program called Radio United: a segment of songs and landmark events of radio throughout the years. Similar events were held in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Digital radio broadcasts currently cover metropolitan areas in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. Originally planned for 1 July, the launch was pushed back due to ABC and SBS not being ready to contribute infrastructure or content.
