Dell upgrades enterprise servers, storage

Systems management software now integrated into hardware

Dell has released fourteen new products in a significant refresh of its enterprise server, workstation and storage systems portfolio.

The company's flagship PowerEdge server has reached its eleventh generation and, like the Precision workstations, is based on the next generation of Intel’s Xeon processors, code named “Nehalem”.

The new PowerEdge portfolio supports native virtualisation and systems management, and Dell is claiming the industry’s best performance per watt with the R710 model.

New PowerEdge servers now ship without optical disk drives, instead, the operating system is provisioned from on-board solid-state memory.

Pricing for the PowerEdge R710 starts from $4,192, including GST.

The new Dell Lifecycle Controller is integrted into all new PowerEdge servers.

Also new is the Dell Management Console, an Altiris-based software solution which claims to reduce or eliminate manual systems management processes.

For storage, Dell has announced the EqualLogic PS6000 storage arrays that integrate seamlessly into existing EqualLogic SANs to form a virtualised pool of storage.

To monitor storage, Dell's SAN Headquarters is a centralized dashboard that monitors performance and events for PS systems. SAN Headquarters is available to any EqualLogic customer with a support agreement at no additional cost.

The EqualLogic PS6000 starts from $32,314, including GST.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
