Japan went on a spending spree this week fueled by the release of Sony's redesigned PSP and partially by Microsoft's Halo 3.
According to Media Create, which monitors weekly video game sales in Japan, Sony's redesigned PSP sold twice as many units as all other systems combined for the week ending September 23.
The PSP "slim" or 2000 as it is called shifted an impressive 278,000 units, 250,000 in the first four days. The Japanese launch was also coupled with a five percent reduction in price.
Nintendo DS was the second best-selling system for the week with 70,000 units sold, followed by Wii with 25,000, and PS2 with 11,000.
On a related note, Microsoft's Halo 3 sold moderately well since launching on Thursday according to data released by Enterbrain. The first-person shooter sold 45,000 copies in 24 hours, an atypical result for a country that doesn't particularly favor the Xbox 360.
