Microsoft has been granted its 5,000th patent in the U.S., the company said Tuesday. The new patent covers technologies that allow users to tune into Xbox 360 games like they would watch a sporting event, it said.
In a statement, Microsoft heralded the milestone 5,000th patent as a symbol of its commitment to research and development of new technologies. The Redmond, Washington, software company, which spends billions of dollars every year on new technologies, sees itself following in the footsteps of other companies that have invested heavily in R&D, such as IBM, which has been granted more than 25,000 patents in the U.S.
The 5,000th patent received by Microsoft covers a set of technologies that will be added to the company's Xbox Live gaming service. The technology allows a user to watch a game or event in real-time, Microsoft said. Users can control one or more "virtual cameras" that allow them to watch the game from different angles, it said.
