Samsung sets third quarter launch for 1GB MMCmicro card

Samsung Electronics Co. plans to begin selling in the third quarter of this year an MMCmicro memory card with 1G byte of storage capacity, it said Thursday.

MMCmicro is one of three new memory card formats that have been designed for use in cell phones and other small, portable electronics gadgets. It was largely developed by Samsung Electronics and is competing against microSD backed by SanDisk and Memory Stick Micro, which was developed by Sony and SanDisk. The new cards are smaller than existing memory cards so they and the companion card slots require less space inside devices and help manufacturers keep the size of their gadgets small.

Samsung announced no price for the new card.
