Maxtor to ship 500GB backup hardware for Macs

Maxtor announced Wednesday that it will be shipping a backup device for Apple Computer hardware that can store up to 500GB of data and offers management features that emulate enterprise-class device functions such as shared network connections, automatic file backup and backup status reports.

The Maxtor Shared Storage Plus system, which began shipping for PCs last month, will be available for Macintosh users next month.

The networked disk storage device can be used to create a storage hub for streaming video, photos and music to various devices without requiring an active PC or Mac on the network. Digital photos, video and other files on Macintosh computers can also be automatically backed up to the device. The Maxtor Shared Storage Plus system can also act as a centralized print server.

Automatic backup devices are available for Mac users across the entire family of Maxtor OneTouch and Maxtor Shared Storage external storage and backup systems.

Key features of the new Maxtor Shared Storage Plus product include:

  • The ability of up to 20 users to simultaneously access and protect files using multiple Macs or PCs on a shared network.
  • Support for Bonjour for automatic network configuration, allowing quick installation by Mac users.
  • A quick-start CD gives Mac or PC users a desktop icon for access to a shared public folder and a set of personal, password-protected private network folders.
  • Two Universal Serial Bus ports to connect and share two USB printers, two additional external storage drives or one of each.
A SimpleView feature that provides detailed backup and storage status at a glance for all users on the network.

According to market research firm IDC, about 61.9 million home networks will be deployed worldwide by the end of this year. Maxtor said it's targeting those networks for sharing entertainment content among different devices, including Macs and PCs on the same shared network. With the new Maxtor Shared Storage Plus, up to 20 people could simultaneously listen to a music collection via a networked sound system, play movies on a networked theatre system and view a slide show on a laptop, all in different areas of a home or office.

The Maxtor Shared Storage Plus network disk storage devices carry retail prices of US$299.95 for the 200GB drive, US$399.95 for a 300GB drive and US$499.95 for a 500GB drive.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
